There is no universal perfect interval

Twenty-five minutes is a useful default because it is long enough to make progress and short enough to feel approachable. It is not a rule about human attention.

The right interval depends on task complexity, your familiarity with the subject, and how easily the work can be paused.

When to choose 25 minutes

Choose a shorter block when you are procrastinating, switching subjects, reading dense material, or working in an environment where interruptions are likely.

  • Starting an essay outline
  • Reviewing flashcards
  • Reading one textbook section
  • Correcting a small set of mistakes

When to choose 50 minutes

Choose 50 minutes when setup takes time and your work benefits from continuity. Examples include timed practice papers, programming exercises, and drafting a complete argument.

GreenDots offers both presets in the guest timer. Try the same kind of task with each preset on different days, then compare how often you stayed engaged and what you completed.
